What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a truly effective way to replace missing or broken teeth, provide long time denture wearers with the freedom from an appliance, and provide lifelike restoration options for clients. Dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth. They are made of titanium posts that are surgically placed in the bone of the jaw. Whether you need one tooth replaced or entire mouth of teeth replaced, dental implants might be right for you. The titanium bonds with the bone in the jaw to create a lifetime of stability. It can be very exciting to think that you can get a brand new set of teeth or just one new tooth, that can change the way you look and feel about yourself.

Who Should Consider Dental Implants?

Dental implants may be the right solution for people who are in good overall health and have enough bone structure to support the implant. In some cases, bone grafts may be done to further qualify a client for the procedure, but you will need to speak to Dr. Benjamin Feintuch about your options surrounding bone grafting. Clients who have missing teeth or have been wearing dentures for a long time might find some relief in knowing they can have permanent replacements, in as little as 6 to 9 months.

Implants can help restore and preserve facial structure – dentures can change the look of a person’s face because they are not always naturally in line with their facial structure – and the bonding that happens between the titanium and bone means the implant will never come out, so normal activities can resume. Usually, most people who want to proceed with dental implants are able to get them.

What is Involved in Getting Dental Implants?

The first step in getting dental implants is to have a thorough examination and discussion with Dr. Benjamin Feintuch at our Long Island dental office. Our general, dental implant and cosmetic practice offers many options for fixing missing and broken teeth. It’s important to determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. Once the decision has been made to move forward with a dental implant treatment, there are typically two steps involved in getting dental implants at our Long Island cosmetic dentist’s office. Sometimes, same day implants are an option for clients; you’ll want to discuss that option with Dr. Feintuch. Otherwise, the two steps involved are surgery and crowning.

Surgery

During the surgery, clients will be anesthetized with general anesthesia so they can sleep during their surgery. The surgeon will create a space in the gum and bone so that a titanium rod can be inserted into the bone. Titanium and bone graft together to create a stable base for the new tooth that is going to be placed on it. The healing time for a dental implant rod can take 3 to 6 months. Once your gums have healed, you will return to the office to have your crowns placed.

Options for Crowns

A crown is the part of the tooth that people are most familiar with – it’s the part we typically call the tooth. The white hard material that forms to make a tooth and sits above the gum line is called the crown. During dental implant treatments, decisions will have to be made about what type of crown will be used to create your new tooth or teeth.

There are several options available for filling the gap made by the missing tooth. A permanent crown is an optimal choice because it will be affixed right to the titanium post and create a very natural looking tooth. The prosthetic will be color matched to your existing teeth and will look and feel like a real tooth. You will be able to carry on with all of the normal eating and drinking activities you once enjoyed; however, you need to treat your crown like a real tooth as well and ensure that if you experienced injury or damage to the tooth that you return to your dentist right away for treatment options.

Another option for dental implants is a partial bridge, that will be attached to surrounding teeth using a crown that is fitted for nearby teeth. This can be attached to the titanium post for more security when there are several teeth involved. This is not typically done for a single missing tooth.

Finally, a third option is a full dental plate, much like a denture plate, when denture wearers want to transition to permanent dentures. Several titanium posts will be surgically placed into the gums and bone, and then a full plate will be fitted on top of the posts. The dentures don’t come out.

Post Procedure Care

Just like your real teeth, you will need to treat your dental implants and care for them as if they were your own. Regular follow up visits to ensure the dental implant is stable will be required, as well as your regular check ups and dental cleanings. You won’t have to make extra trips though; this can all be done at your semi-annual dental visit.

You will be able to brush and floss your teeth as you normally would and should any issues arise with your implant, or the teeth surrounding it, you’ll simply have to call Dr. Benjamin Feintuch’s office in Long Island to have your implant assessed.
